awakening quiltlet

Below is the CPP image colored with pencils and copied on Printed Treasures. Mistakenly, I heat set my colors without removing the paper back; then it was impossible to peel. I soaked it to loosen the paper and while that was laying out to dry....

I pulled this bag out.

Inside are scraps of linen, table cloths, napkins, silks, velvet, poly, cheese cloth..... Last year a few friends got together and dyed fabric. I didn't have enough ppd white, so I threw in whatever I had.

I abandoned the print and went with this vintage napkin from the bag.

The design was stitched out with heavy black cotton then quilted with lavender thread.

Using some of the cut linen scraps I played around with some embellishment. Nothing is stitched so I'm sure it will change.

I found the miniature garden tools which I think I will use.

The lace piece is soaking in a strong cup of coffee. If it doesn't stain I don't think I'll use it.

Although, I don't think I'll break out into the book making business, I liked making this and can see making a few more for the upcoming Holiday gifting season.

The embellishment is stitched into place.

The inside was decorated with bright colored fabrics and coils of brass wire. The wire was glued down with E6000. The inside cover and outside were glued together with Fabric Tac, then stitched through the spine.

Tonight, during Project Runway, I'll stitch the pages to the cover.

I uploaded the pix through Picasa and they expand... so I guess the problem occurs when I upload directly from my picture file....

There are always two sides.....

I cut the pieces for this book/journal awhile ago and am just getting back to it. After the embellishment is stitched down, I'll load the journal with parchment pages and try my hand at binding it. The directions I'll use are from Creative Ways with Fibre and Stitch.

And I liked how this weed looked, so I took it's picture. To my surprise - the reflection of sun on the lens created the double circle image behind.

Recycling

Did you ever make paper beads as a kid? Seeing this post reminded me of all the paper stuff I used to make. Paper beads are back, I guess.

Using scraps of thread, some of the beads were wrapped and sprinkled with glass glitter. The beads will be used on the quiltlet projects.

For fun, I used some of the recycled silver wire and made a chunky bead necklace.

And while the wire was out, I finished the silver piece made as my first silver metal clay experiment. Black hemp was used for the necklace parts on both. A satin or leather cord would have been more elegant, but I had the hemp, so......

And how sweet. This little envelope was secretly placed in my bag, "open me" was written on the front. Inside, the mother of pearl buttons - below. I will save them to sew on something special.

The painted quilt for a friend.

Progress has slowed. - I used (and knew better) a white cotton batt. The batt is migrating, causing unsightly lint threads and wads on the front. When bound, I'm hoping a good de linting will take care of the problem.

Sedum certainly is not a showy, bold perennial, but it sure makes it's own statement from spring into fall. I love in the spring, when it pops through the ground, then matures through it's shades of green. Now, the tiny pink flowers. It will be one of the last to loose it's burgundy color in late fall.

Fall 'musings'

Finishing up a few penny rugs for a fall birthday gift. My friend Michelle makes and sells the Grab and Go Kits.

I heard the apples this fall will be very good. I also heard in addition to yesterday being 9/9/09, it was the 252th day of the year. (2+5+2=9). I didn't check, but if it's true, that's cool.

Spiders seem to be all over the place in the fall. I think spiders are really fiber artists at heart. Look at the workmanship in that web.

I don't know what this is called, it grows in the weed garden in the back. I love the colors of it. It's at the end of it's season in the fall.

Hens and Chicks. I love this little, maintenance free plant. It seems to love the fall even when everything else is dying off.

And, the Doctors Foster and Smith Fall catalog came yesterday. So if you don't have anything better to do with your time or money this fall, planning your pet's masquerade party might be fun. Really. Really?

more painting and practice...

Friends Fabric Art carries the Stewart Gill paints used to paint this flower and the other painted piece, posted previously. I added a few extra colors to my paint stash in order to finish the flower design. You can order online or by phone, they are great - (the paints and the ladies at Friends Fabric Art).

This practice piece was going to go with the above and be the backside of a bag. After quilting it, I realized I had used two different black fabrics and the side panels were yet another... fabric can be funny like that, I've done that before. The threads were a variety of silks and Invisafil, all 100wt. :---------------------------:

I added another vintage safety pin to the quiltlet. I like it with two.

I used the Kindness creative prompt for my second quiltlet. After tea staining the copied image, I decided it wasn't dark enough, and added paints. It turned greenish for some reason, I went with it- adding more greens and pinks.

The background is some type of fancy fabric. I'm not sure what you would call it; it's wrinkly, crinkly, shiny and silky, but it's not silk. I used a fusible interfacing to give it some stability while I quilted it. It would make a lovely quilted garment.

The quilting shows better on the back, below. It was a good exercise in quilting blindly- the sheen of the fabric made it difficult to see where I was stitching. I used Invisafil 100wt thread. I like that thread.

And remember the button with the feathered design? I also found this little butterfly and star design, so tiny and sweet.

Random thoughts and a finished quiltlet...

Today is the kid's first day of the 2009/10 school year. It's always bittersweet on the last day of summer. Yesterday, was no different. And even more so- today is the first day of the last year of high school for the oldest.

I've finished my first year of blogging. A self challenge I wasn't sure I would complete. I did. People ask - why do you blog? Blogging is like a big, fat show and tell. Who didn't love show and tell in Kindergarten? I loved it, I loved all of Kindergarten for that matter (what I remember of it anyway).

The first quiltlet is finished. Simple, quick and fun. I liked making it.

The next doodle was copied off using the same label, stabilizer technique. I darkened the copy to get a darker look. The white fabric grayed over a little, that was okay as I had plans to tea stain it, anyway. I pulled out some scraps of fancy fabrics and ribbons.

Pecking through the buttons I came across this beautiful button shown below. I pulled it out to use it on the quiltlet, but then decided- I'm going to save it and use it with the silver metal clay. I love the design of it, looks like tiny feathers. My favorite.

I am going to, somehow, use these antique safety pins, below. I've been saving them for the right project. I think this is it.

I picked teas that I hoped would steep into a pinkish color. One of the bags broke when I was swishing it around. To add to the spotted look, I put some coffee grounds on top to see what would happen.
