leather applique

The suede side of the leather was used.  It's color and feel are really soft.

An extra long zipper which goes way down the side . . . 

 . . . . offers plenty of room for storing and transporting stuff.

This was fun to make and given as a gift.

(I missed yesterday of take no days off november.... 

But not for lack of trying, I wasn't able to connect from my laptop and forgot to go back to it.)

on the frame today

The colors of this quilt are really pretty in real life. But it's that type of fabric that you just can't see what your doing.  I turn the lights off and use the shadows of a light pointed sideways.

Quilted silk with silk threads inspired by harvest drawings in my sketchbook.

The fabric is a light weight silk remnant I picked out of a clearance bin.  

Originally, I thought I'd paint it with bright colors and quickly realized it was just too sheer. 

 I rust dyed it instead.

It then became the perfect fabric for my harvest thread sketch.

coloring nature with fabrics

A few days this past week were just too nice to pass up, 

so we set out on foot.

I sure was glad to have my camera.  Inspiration for this little work came from the above photo.  

 It was fun to play around with my scraps of stuff 

...wool, cheesecloth, silks, different threads...

While we were out and I was puttering around taking pictures of some cool looking nature,

I found him waiting on the granite bench.

Actually, I put him there.

He was working.  

I'm training him and hopefully he can become a visiting therapy dog.

He's still gottalotta puppy in him tho.

leather applique

Ages ago I picked up a bunch of leather remnants and now with the cooler nights I've been in the sewing room tackling the pile.

This black piece didn't photo too well, it's not as shiny as it appears.

It's a string bag worn like a back pack.

A big pocket inside with a leather flap and a key ring.

Drawstring closure makes it easy for quick opening and closing.

The string attaches to the bag through a metal loop tab.

 I can't wait to start using this bag. 

The only problem is the handle is not attached yet.

I designed the pattern but did not make a fabric sample.  

Attaching the handle is not going to be as easy as I thought.

summer nature study

Today is the Fiberactions group reveal.

This challenge was to use a triadic color scheme.

Drawn images from my sketchbook were transferred onto silk cloth. 

I then made a quilt sandwich and outline stitched the images with a thick upholstery weight thread.  Using a variety of textile paints, inks, crayons and markers the triadic color scheme was added.

Once the paint and inks were dry the images were quilted with silk threads.

The edges were finished with a satin stitch and each became a mini quilt.

The background is a piece of dyed burlap.  There is a photo of the burlap shown below.  It was solid violet and I made a freezer paper stencil to add the darker design.

The burlap was sandwiched and completely quilted before the mini quilts were attached.

In hind sight - the burlap did not require an additional painted design, nor the decorative quilting because neither shows.

 Small beads, buttons and embroidery threads were added to fill in some of the blank spaces.

This was a fun project to work on. 

 I enjoyed spending time on each of the mini quilts in between busy summer activities and completing other tasks.
